Art portfolio

I have always been an observer and an introvert. When I was younger, I listened more than I spoke, and, in the process, I lost my own voice. However, art has enabled me to rediscover that voice — to take the beauty I see in the world and share my own perspective with others. I am especially fascinated by drawing the people around me and observing how they communicate through their movement, posture, expressions, appearance, and interactions with others.

Art, to me, is not only about creation, but also transformation; I am motivated to create art because I can use my voice and platform to represent the minority, highlight unseen perspectives, and share overlooked stories and forgotten injustices.

In this portfolio, I touch on issues I find important, such as my concentration theme of body language as well as issues of pollution and climate change in pieces such as Uncapped and Our Night.

In my concentration I explored body language and the relationship between the mind and the body. In our day to day lives, most of us rely heavily on speaking or texting as a form of communication; however, we also tend to express ourselves with our body and subconsciously translate other people’s body language into social cues. I wanted to capture these nuances of common body language and bring attention to the language that goes unnoticed.

When I began my concentration, I focused on a broader area of study: the entire human body. However, I quickly realized hands were the most expressive part of the body besides the face — after all, everyone talks with their hands. As I focused more on hands, I began to work more loosely with the rest of the body. Eventually I eliminated the rest of the body altogether and made hands my main subjects.
